In 2021, Birdon was awarded a contract by the US Navy to remove scrap metal and other solid waste such as plastic and tires from the island of Diego Garcia.

Diego Garcia is the largest atoll within the Chagos Archipelago in the British Indian Ocean Territory, located approximately 1100 miles from the southern tip of India and is home to both US and British Navy personnel.

Birdon is currently responsible for the safe removal and disposal of an estimated 1800 tons of steel, copper, aluminium, plastics and tires annually. To accomplish this, Birdon sends a team to the island to organise and load materials onto a barge for passage off the island. Birdon then facilitates the appropriate and reputable disposal channel in countries such as Singapore and Australia.

Birdon’s established network of environmentally reputable disposal outlets was part of the selection process to reduce risk for the US Navy.
